A handful of hotels sit close to Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ), as the terminal is set in Enfield, about 35 km north of the city rather than in a hotel district. With downtown Halifax a 30 to 40 minute drive away and Dartmouth and Bedford nearby, most visitors base themselves in the city or across the harbour and reach the airport by taxi or pre-booked transfer. Where you stay really comes down to two things: the time of your flight, and whether you want the city or a base for exploring the coast.

Many Halifax hotels sit close to the harbour and waterfront
AreaDrive to YHZBest for
Airport area (Enfield)~5 minVery early or late flights and short layovers
Fall River~15–20 minA quieter base between the airport and the city
Bedford~25–30 minSuburban hotels with easy harbour access
Dartmouth~30 minAcross the harbour from downtown, often better value
Downtown Halifax~30–40 minSightseeing, restaurants and the waterfront

City base or coastal base?

The two main choices pull in different directions. Downtown Halifax keeps you steps from the harbourfront boardwalk, Citadel Hill and a dense run of restaurants and pubs, which suits sightseeing and short trips. Staying in Dartmouth or Bedford trades a little of that buzz for easier parking, often better value, and quick access to the harbour and the highways out to the South Shore and the Annapolis Valley, making them a natural pick for a touring trip or a family base. Fall River is a sensible compromise if you want to be between the airport and the city without a long drive.

Hotels for an early-morning flight

A dawn departure changes the maths. Staying in the airport area around Enfield, about five minutes from the terminal, removes the risk of a long pre-sunrise drive — especially welcome on an icy winter morning — and lets you sleep a little later. Some properties run a shuttle to the terminal, though it is never guaranteed, so check the timing when you book. From a city or harbour hotel, a pre-booked transfer or taxi is the reliable fallback for getting to check-in on time.

Booking tips

  • Confirm whether the rate includes an airport shuttle, and the exact pick-up time, before you rely on it.
  • Ask about free parking if you are picking up a hire car at the terminal.
  • Book well ahead for the summer high season and holidays, when Halifax fills up and the best rooms sell out.
  • If you are heading out to the coast, plan the journey first with our guide to Halifax, Dartmouth and the Nova Scotia coast.
